How to make a greenhouse: 8 designs and a sea of ideas

Having even a small plot of land, it is difficult to do without a greenhouse. Grow seedlings, get an early harvest, cover them from possible frost, from heat, make the plants in the flowerbed bloom earlier – all this can be done with the help of this device. And it is not difficult to make a greenhouse with your own hands. There are quite simple designs, there are more complex, but the manufacture of any of them does not require special education.

The frame for the greenhouse can be made of wood (boards), metal (angle, profile pipe or rebar) or PVC pipes (round or square). Cover the greenhouse with the same materials as the greenhouse: film, spunbonod (also called agrovolokno or non-woven covering material), polycarbonate and glass. Since the size of greenhouses is smaller (plants in greenhouses are served from the outside), then the requirements for them are not so tough: even a strong wind they are not afraid.

Greenhouse size

Since the plants in the greenhouse are serviced from the outside, its width is chosen so that you can comfortably handle plants planted closer to the middle. You determine this by experience: sit down and try to reach some area with your hand. You measure the distance. You get the width of the greenhouse at one-sided approach. This is if the greenhouse is located so that from the second side to it can not approach (at the wall, for example). If you can approach from both sides, this result is doubled.

The distance for each person is different: height and physical condition influence. Do not chase economy, making it wider than necessary. You will have to spend a lot of time on weeding, loosening, fertilizing, other works. A couple of hours in an uncomfortable position, and no strength remains. Therefore, it is better to make the greenhouse a little narrower, but to work comfortably: getting pleasure from the work, you spend less effort.

And the length of the greenhouse is chosen based on the layout of the site. It is arbitrary.

Simple greenhouse of arcs under the film or spunbond

This greenhouse is made of several boards, knocked down to the required dimensions, PVC pipe arcs, which are attached to a wooden base. The tops of these arcs are connected at the top with a bar or the same pipe. If it will be a bar, it should be well processed, rounding the edges so that the film does not tear.

How to fix the arcs

About how to fix the PVC pipe arcs on the frame of the greenhouse. Fasten most often with the use of metal perforated tape. Take a small piece of it centimeters 5-6 centimeters, self-tapping screws and a screwdriver. And fasten on both sides. For reliability, you can do it twice.

In exactly the same way, you can fix them from the inside, to hold them tighter, add bars.

Another option: near the frame, hammer in sections of rebar, and on them to put pipes and only then fix them with clamps to the boards of the frame. This option is more reliable.

How to fix the film

Attach the film to PVC pipes can be attached to double-sided tape. But only if the film used inexpensive polyethylene: tear off without damaging it is impossible, and polyethylene serves no more than a year. So for a seasonal greenhouse this option from the category of “cheap and surly”. The second method – special clips for fixing the film and everything that can replace them – a piece of old hose, cut lengthwise, pipe clamp, which are used for installation of pipelines, office binders, etc.

It also makes sense to fix a bar on both sides of the edges of the film. To do this, the film is cut off more than necessary in length, in the excess wrap the bar and fix the film on it. Now you have a piece of film, on the short sides of which the bars are attached. You leave one on one side, the second one is thrown over to the other. Now you do not need to press the film to the ground with stones: it is not badly held by the bar. It is also convenient to open the greenhouse for airing, you have wrapped the film, put it on top.

You can use small nails to fix the film, but put washers under the caps. It is faster to work with a construction stapler with staples. To prevent the film from tearing at the attachment points, it should be padded with something. It is possible – a dense braid or just a strip of fabric, and in it already hammer the fasteners.

A more powerful option

If there is a need to make a greenhouse with PVC arcs more reliable, to the base of the boards in the center of the short side nail wooden posts. To them on the rib is attached to the board, in which holes are pre-drilled with a diameter larger than the outer diameter of the pipes.

When installing the pipe is threaded through the hole. To fix it on the sides can be as suggested above, or do another way: in the bars pre-install the pins, and on them to put the pipe.

The simplest greenhouse

What is good PVC pipes, so that they are easy to bend. Also that they weigh little. An ideal option for a lightweight portable greenhouse, especially if you combine it with spunbond. This material can be sewn. Take a piece of density of 30 kg/m2, with a step of 50 -60 cm to make a waders in it. For the waders to adjust across a strip of the same material width of about 10 cm (it is stitched on both sides). Inside, insert the pipes cut into the necessary sections.

Now all this can be installed on the bed: you stick pegs in two rows on one and the other side of the bed, on them you put the pipe. Immediately you get a ready-made greenhouse. And what else is convenient: you open and close the plants simply by collecting or spreading spunbond on the arc. This is a very convenient temporary greenhouse: as soon as it is not needed, in a couple of minutes it can be removed and folded.

Triangular greenhouse made of boards

This greenhouse is good for seedlings, but you can make it for peppers, eggplants. In the middle of the base is nailed post. To it – two sloping boards. The cross-section turns out to be a triangle. If the greenhouse is needed long, about every meter install the same construction. All the tops are connected with a long bar or pipe. Simple and convenient design of this greenhouse.

Cucumbers with it are grown only until they begin to twist. Under the cucumbers cover material is removed, the sides are nailed (screwed) posts, between which the twine is stretched.

Greenhouse “Breadbox” and “Butterfly” – photo

This design is called “breadbox” because it is one in one similar to plastic containers for bread. Its lid also rises up, hiding behind the other half. If you look at the photo, you will understand everything.

There are two types of such products: opening from one or two sides. If it is shallow, you can work with a lid opening from one side. If the width is more than a meter, it will be easier to work if there is access from both sides. This construction with two opening sides has its own name: “Snail”.

On the manufactured frame stretch the film, spunbond, but more popular for this design is polycarbonate.

The second design differs in the type of door opening. Its vault is also made on arcs, but opens on hinges upward (see picture).

They can be installed directly on the ground or on a prepared base of bricks or timber. In some cases, the covers do not open immediately from the ground, but there is a small edge of 15-20 cm.

From improvised materials

Turn unnecessary things into useful products – in this our people are not equal. Make greenhouses from such things, of which you will never think.

For example, you can easily make a greenhouse with your own hands from old window frames. When replacing the windows do not hurry to throw them away. From them you can make a great greenhouse. And the designs can be different. The simplest is a case, knocked down from boards, to which the window frame (with glass, of course) is attached to the top as a cover.

They make greenhouses out of barrels. Covered with an old umbrella of transparent film or cut plastic water canisters.

A homemade greenhouse can be made from a plastic or foam box. Although “make” – it’s a mouthful. All that is needed is to stretch the film.

Mini greenhouses for seedlings

For those who grow seedlings for their own vegetable garden or flower garden, large volumes are not necessary. You need small greenhouses. And many grow seedlings on balconies. All of the above designs can be used for the balcony in reduced sizes. For very small plantings can generally take plastic trays for eggs.
