Studio apartment: interior design

Studio apartment – this type of housing appeared not so long ago, but the demand for it is stable. Such apartments are bought mainly by young people. There are two reasons. First – they do not need a lot of rooms and it is much more convenient when everything is in sight and, sitting at the table in the kitchen, you can watch a movie or control the music center. The second reason of economic nature: the price per square meter in studio apartments is lower than in standard apartments with partitions of similar size. It is understandable: less walls, less materials and work. It is also attractive that the design of a studio apartment can be done in the most innovative style: the absence of partitions and doors gives more space for the realization of the most daring ideas and non-standard solutions.

Zoning in the design of a studio apartment

A single space is good because it can be divided at will. For comfort we need three zones: kitchen-dining room, recreation area and working area. Since in addition to the outer walls there are only those that fence off the bathroom, it will be necessary to allocate them by some other methods. Designers for zoning use:

  • furniture,
  • light partitions (plasterboard, furniture shelves, openwork, glass, etc.),
  • separation by color and texture of walls,
  • the level and material of the floor and ceiling.

These all ways can be combined or used separately. It only seems that the choice is small. In fact, it is huge. For example, light partitions. It can be some kind of construction from plasterboard. It can start at one of the walls and literally separate the two zones.

The second option – the partition stands in the middle of the room, also quite clearly hinting at different zones. But in this case it is made light, translucent, not “loading” space.

Another variant of a partition standing in the middle of a studio apartment, but at the same time it looks harmonious and does not divide it into cells. Probably, it’s because the sofa fits in very well, and the walls are light-colored.

In many cases, the partition is not up to the ceiling. It is opaque, but also does not finally separate one zone from another, separating them with a wall.

The partition doesn't reach the ceiling. It allows you to put something up or hang something, but still leaves the whole room unified

Options and variations can be very, very many. Partitions can be openwork, glass, mirror. It can be a shelf from floor to ceiling, on which there are books, some decorative things. Very well divide the zones Japanese curtains. They are practically weightless, can be moved and sliding. They are made of fabric, just at the top and bottom in a specially stitched wader put a rod that stretches the fabric, which makes it look stiff.

Probably, developing the design of a studio apartment independently, it is more reasonable to do it first with the help of curtains. This is the most mobile and inexpensive way, which will allow you to easily change everything, if you decide to change the zones in places or change their area. When everything is finalized and you realize that you are comfortable, it will be possible to put some more serious partitions on these places, if desired.

Several interesting ideas for dividing a studio apartment into zones, there are in the following photos.

Kitchen zone

Equipment and design of the kitchen area in a studio apartment is probably the most difficult task. Since there are no partitions, without a powerful hood, all odors and soot will spread without barriers. Therefore, this technique must necessarily be of good quality. One more thing: since everything is in plain sight, there should be nothing on the countertops. Everything is spread out in cabinets and drawers, which should be a lot. To rationally organize the space, it makes sense to use storage systems and modern pull-out shelves that allow you to use corners or cabinets up to the ceiling (corner and lowering shelves).

The floor in the kitchen area is most often raised. This is an additional factor that allows you to delimit the room. Although, from a practical point of view, it is preferable that the raised was the rest of the room – less garbage will be carried. If the interior is designed for one person, it is not so important: cook in these cases a little and infrequently. But for a young family it can be an important factor.

Design for small studio apartments

If the studio apartment is small – 20-30 squares – in order not to be cramped, you will have to resort to tricks. The first one is to use a table as a separator of zones. It can be made in the form of a bar, you can equip it so that on the side of the kitchen was a lot of drawers, and on the side of the room stood chairs. Then, depending on the situation, it can be used for cooking and as a dining table.

If there are enough surfaces for cooking, a small dining table can be used as a divider. Behind it, if necessary, can fit more people, which is important if relatives and friends will periodically visit.

An important point: choosing appliances for the kitchen in a studio apartment, you will have to think not only about how well it will fit into the interior, which in itself is already important. You will need to choose a quiet one, or at least one that makes minimal noise. It is unlikely that you will like to sleep under the roar of the refrigerator. It, by the way, can be disguised under a closet or buy a built-in one.

If the room is long and narrow, you will have to fit all the furniture in a different way. In this case, there will be two cabinets, the back side of which will serve as a partition or table, and one of the ends – the entrance.

Kitchens in spacious studios

If the studio apartment has an area of 40 square meters and more, you can protect the kitchen area with a more solid partition. It should not be massive, but on the contrary, airy. The best in these cases look smooth rounded lines. And if you correctly play it also on the wall, the effect is very interesting (see photo).

The wall seems to continue the partition. Which makes the boundaries blurred....

If there is a desire, you can put a full-fledged dining table. This is an option for those who enjoy the process itself…

The main task in the design of any kitchen – to make it so that it was not only beautiful, but also convenient, and developing the design of a studio apartment to the requirements added complexity: furniture for the kitchen should not “fall out” of the general style. And this is not easy. Too different purpose and materials, and functionality too. A few examples of successful combinations in the photo.

Rest area

It is no less important to properly organize a cozy place for relaxation. There are two approaches. The first is to put a modern sofa, which is transformed into a comfortable sleeping place. In this case, this area is decorated as a living room – a coffee table, poufs, armchairs.

The second approach is to allocate the zone in which the bed stands. You can do this in different ways. The choice of method depends on wishes. Someone is enough to just put the bed, someone wants at least some privacy and makes even translucent, but the wall, and someone else is not enough and this: you need at least a knitted partition-shade, which will hide the sleeping place and create its own, private corner.

An interesting solution is to raise the sleeping area on a podium and arrange a storage system in it. If the ceiling height in the apartment is at least 2.7 m, it can be realized.

The sleeper is raised, and underneath it are storage drawers for your belongings

Another way to hide the bed from prying eyes is to raise it on the closet. This, too, is possible if the ceilings are high enough.

A few more ideas for the design of a sleeping place are on the photo.

Studio apartment design should combine practicality, convenience and attractiveness. Such a combination is not easy to achieve, but it is possible, especially if you use the latest construction technologies – like polymer flooring, plasterboard partitions or transforming furniture – a bed, which during the day looks like a closet or something similar.
