At what height to install the sink (washbasin) in the bathroom

Renovations are always new and new challenges. Such a seemingly simple question about at what level to hang the sink. It can be confusing. No, really. What should be the height of the sink in the bathroom to use it was convenient. Of course, we are used to what we have. But maybe we can make it more comfortable? You can.

Size and shape of the sink

In some ways, the shape and size of the sink affect the height of its installation. So let’s start with these parameters. By size, wash basins can be divided into three categories: medium, large and small. It’s simple. “Normal width” of the sink is considered 55-65 cm. Anything wider is big, anything narrower is small.

The table summarizes the most common sizes of bathroom sinks. Manufacturers and sellers divide washbasins by size into five classes. Particularly successful models by design are produced in several sizes, in several classes. The table, by the way, is for reference. It does not mean that there are no sinks of larger or smaller sizes, but “to the main” they do not belong.

The size in width with an asterisk means that this depth is acceptable when installing the sink on the cabinet. For hanging, this option is not suitable because of the low stability. The stops are too short. But for the nightstand, this is not a hindrance.

A few more words about the depth of the washbasin and the distance from the edge to the drain. Too shallow sinks are inconvenient, as even a small pressure of water is fraught with splashes around. So minimally take 15 cm, and deeper is always welcome. The distance to the drain should also not be less than 15 cm. But here the point is that it is easier to install the siphon. Otherwise, you will have a hard time, you will have to look for non-standard solutions, and it is always expensive.

The most compact washbasins

The narrowest sink of “ordinary” sinks has a width of only 40 cm. Its full size is 22*40*70 cm. There are other very compact options. The dimensions are about the same, just stretched not in length, but in width. The smallest have the shape of a rectangle and a laconic design. There are also small round sinks with a diameter of only about 20 cm. But they are more difficult to install – some kind of countertop is required. And rectangular ones can be installed on ordinary brackets or pins.

And also small sinks are installed very unconventional. In any case, you would not expect to see a sink near the door on the partition or behind a cupboard that is only 42-45 cm wide. Even less do you expect to see a sink in place of a cistern. This is possible if the installation for a wall-hung toilet is low or the cistern is simply closed with a false wall.

Surface-mounted: rectangular, oval and round

Today there are not only sinks of traditional shapes. There are also overhead or desktop. They look more unusual, are easier to install, and in terms of comfort are not inferior to traditional ones. In terms of shape, they are probably the most diverse. There are rectangular, square, round, oval, in the form of bowls and hemispheres.

Their dimensions are worth talking about separately. This is, in fact, a solid not standard and they are put only on the countertop. When choosing the height of the countertop installation under the overhead sink in the bathroom, take into account the depth of the bowl. After all, its edges will be elevated. So the highest point in this case should be considered the edges. And calculate the installation level of the countertop, not the sink.

Also do not forget about the price. In this category, most of them are not cheap. This is not mass production, and very small batches. But individual and unusual.

Corner washbasins

Time goes on and changes our habits. Today it no longer seems excessive to have a washbasin in the toilet. It is perceived rather as a necessity. But most of the apartments of the old housing stock can not please with the size of the toilets. And we have to look for non-standard variants. One of them is a corner washbasin. They are compact and use the area that is very difficult to “settle”.

The size of corner sinks for the bathroom varies widely. But to describe their size is difficult – the shape is very non-standard. It is not a triangle, because the size of the walls is usually smaller – the bowl protrudes. And it protrudes to a greater or lesser extent. And there are those that are mounted in the corner, but have the shape of a rectangle. In general, it is not easy.

Let’s agree so that we will talk about the dimensions of corner washbasins on the length of the sides adjacent to the walls. The depth of the bowl is also important. It is difficult to describe the rest – you need to look at the photo and the scheme. In general, this is the size range of corner sinks:

• Length of sides 310-650 mm
• Depth 12,5-16 mm

Most of the corner porcelain or earthenware washbasins have small dimensions. After all, this option is either in a mini-bathroom, or in the toilet. And here the space is limited.

So most of the walls take about 38-45 cm. And more often they have an irregular shape. In the sense that on one wall the length is shorter, on the other longer. Symmetrical ones are much less. Well, everything is clear here. These are options for the right or left corner. After all, in one of them often passes the riser.

But there are not only small corner washbasins. There are quite large, the size of the walls 60-65 cm by 45-55 cm. They can be mounted above the bathtub. Not to say that this is very convenient, but it is better than washing over the bathtub.

The height of the sink in the bathroom

In addition to choosing the size, you will still have to decide at what height to install the washbasin. According to SNiP recommendations, the installation height of the washbasin is 75-85 cm from the floor. But these standards were written more than twenty years ago. They are calculated under the average height. It is no secret that the previous generation was lower. And significantly lower, if you believe the statistics.

So the recommended parameters have become too uncomfortable. If it is still convenient to wash your hands, you have to bend down too low to wash your face. In narrow rooms, tall people have to almost acrobatic tricks to demonstrate.

How to choose the height of the sink

If state institutions are obliged to comply with regulations, then in private homes and apartments you can choose the height of the installation of the sink that is convenient. How is it determined? The upper edge of the washbasin should be about 10-15 cm below the elbow of a standing person.

If the inhabitants of the house or apartment do not differ greatly in height, everything is clear. It is even easier if only one person lives. In such cases, the height of the sink in the bathroom is determined simply. But what to do if the difference in height is great? It is necessary to look for a compromise. You can either choose an “average” value, or be guided by the majority. It is also worth saying that children and teenagers in the active phase of growth are not taken into account. They grow quickly, and bathroom renovation is done obviously not once a year. To make it convenient for them to use, make a bench-ladder.

But the older people of low height are not driven to the ladder. Of course, it depends on the person, but some people are not annoyed by the fact that you have to raise your hands to wash or wash them. It’s more important to them not to bend over. That’s the real problem. If it is not possible to come to an agreement, if possible, make two sinks. This, by the way, and the solution to the problem, if several people are going to work at the same time, and the bathroom is only one.

When you don’t have to choose

Sinks with a pedestal or “tulip” and a pedestal sink and a pedestal cabinet under the washbasin will not allow you to choose the height of the installation of the washbasin. What height there is a pedestal or pedestal, on that and will be located washbasin. With a bollard there are still at least some options. If the legs are adjustable, you can add a couple of centimeters. You can, of course, replace the legs with higher ones. But this is also only a few centimeters. True, they can also be enough to make washing more comfortable.

There are, however, suspended bollards for washbasins in the bathroom. They are fixed at an arbitrary height. So in this case, too, you can raise or lower the level at will.

With washbasins of the “tulip” type, there is no possibility to change the height at all. What height there is a “leg”, so it will be. But there is a possibility to choose the height of this “leg”. True, our assortment is not so wide, but you can order almost anything. And you can order through the Internet and not only on domestic sites. You will be surprised (or not), but often buy in Europe and pay for delivery is cheaper than in the store.

Installation Methods

There are several ways to install the sink in the bathroom.

• Hang it on the wall.
• Make a countertop and install the sink in it. There are two options:
  • Built-in countertop manhole sink. This is when the edge of the sink coincides in height with the countertop. It looks good, but it is difficult to implement.
  • Surface-mounted installation. In the countertop make a small hole to install the sink, but less than the size of the sink. It turns out that the sink just lies on top. The height of the overhead sink may not be too high.

The first two methods stipulate that you can / will have to choose at what level to install the sink. After all, the height of the sink is chosen according to your preference for mounting brackets and pins. But not all walls can bear such a load. Yes, and installation in a ready-made cabinet is much easier. Nothing needs to be drilled, fastened. Just set the sink of the appropriate shape, connect water and sewerage, and that’s it. But there are no opportunities to significantly change the height of the sink.

Whether it can be moved and what is needed for this

The washbasin can be moved within the bathroom without any restrictions. You can only be restricted by the water and sewer connections. It is up to you to change the height of the washbasin. Well, maybe even the builders who will do the work. It will only be necessary to observe the minimum distances to the walls, bathroom, etc. But this is only for ease of use. In your home in this respect, you are entitled to violate the recommendations of SNiP.

It is not necessary to notify anyone about the installation of a new sink, if it is put in “wet” areas. To such include all types of bathrooms. That is, if you decide to install a washbasin in the toilet, and before it was not there, you only need to make new connection points to the sewer and water supply.
