Often in apartments and houses, the bathroom is combined. This is justified from the point of view of saving space (one less wall), and from the point of view of functionality too. But it is not easy to design a bathroom: it is necessary to place the plumbing correctly, and sometimes also household appliances (water heater and washing machine). About all the subtleties of this difficult occupation below.

Ergonomics of the bathroom
To use the sanitary ware was convenient, it should be located at a certain height, maintaining a minimum tolerance to the walls and other objects:
- the optimum size of the washbasin is 48-61 cm (with smaller sizes, even washing hands is uncomfortable);
- there should be free space in front of the washbasin – at least 69 cm;
- the upper shelves in the bathroom should be located no higher than 180 cm;
- the center of the toilet bowl should be located no closer than 40 cm from the side wall;
- the bidet should be placed so that the side is no closer than 30 cm from the wall;
- toilet paper holder is placed at arm’s length – about 80-90 cm from the back wall at a height of 60-70 cm;
When designing a bathroom, these dimensions should be kept in mind, but they can and should be adjusted. They are calculated for the average height and average size of the human body. Determining the exact location of this or that interior item, “try on” the distance on yourself. If you are comfortable, at such a distance and can be installed.
How to arrange everything
In a modern bathroom, in addition to sanitary ware, there are also household appliances. For lack of another place here put a washing machine, and sometimes a boiler. So, in addition to the toilet, sink and bathtub/shower you have to find a place for two other large items.
Finding a place for the machine
One of the options is to choose a machine and a sink so that the washing machine is hidden under the washbasin. The minus of this solution is that the sink will be higher than usual, and the machine will have to look for a narrow one. If there are tall people in the family, a slightly higher located plumbing – it is not terrible, and saving space is solid. In the photo below is one of the variants of such a design of the bathroom. The sink is used rectangular – there are a lot of such today.
If it is impossible to raise the washbasin, the machine is placed where it “fits”. To keep the space above it, you can make shelves on top. If there is a need to hang a boiler, it is the right place above the machine.
If space is very limited, look at top-loading washing machines. They have smaller dimensions and can squeeze into a small gap.
Bathtub or shower stall
The bathroom, of course, has an advantage – in it you can bask in warm water. But it takes up a lot of space and in some cases this convenience can be neglected by putting or making a shower cabin.
If you do not want to say goodbye to the bathroom, we will “fit” it and all the necessary items. The most obvious way is to place the sink so that one edge of it is above the bathtub. But it is necessary to make sure that it is convenient to use the washbasin.
If you just use a small-sized washbasin, it will cause considerable inconvenience: splashes will fly in all directions, and accessories will have nowhere to put. In such cases, make a countertop (as in the photo above), facing it with mosaic or tiles. This design takes up less space, and the functionality is even higher.
Another option is to put a corner bath, thus freeing up one corner for the installation of a washing machine or toilet.
Another option is to use a bathtub of a non-standard shape. For example, such as in the photo. And the place under the machine found …
If still in the bathroom can not fit a bath, put a shower cabin (how to install a shower cabin read here). And it is not necessary to buy a ready-made one, you can make it yourself – build a tray of tiles and install doors.
Homemade shower cabin fits well into the end of a long and narrow bathroom. You can simply fence off about a meter from the wall, installing doors. And the doors can be put glass (tempered glass). They do not divide a small space and the design of the bathroom is more harmonious.
In the square rooms, they are used to protect a part of the area by putting a dividing wall. With this solution, it should be remembered that the minimum size of the shower stall is 90*90 cm. This is not enough – you can not wave your hands in such a cubicle, so if possible, make at least a little more.
Where to put the bidet
It is much more convenient to use the bathroom if there is a bidet in it. Optimally, if it can be placed next to the toilet bowl (the distance between the two earthenware products is at least 40 cm). If there is not enough space next to it, you can install it on the opposite wall. The main thing is that there was connected water and drainage.
The problem is that with all the approaches, this sanitary item takes about a meter of useful space. If the total area of the bathroom is only 4-5 square meters, this is a lot. In this case, you can install a hygienic shower. The toilet bowl is supplied with warm/cold water, a mixer and a flexible hose with a special nozzle. In terms of functionality, this option is slightly inferior to the bidet, but it is also very convenient.
Trends in decoration
Most often the design of the bathroom is developed taking into account that the walls will be lined with ceramic tiles. Until not so long ago, the competitors of this material was not observed. Today, mosaic is becoming increasingly popular. This is a very small tile (glass or ceramic), glued on a polymer mesh. Small tiles usually have several shades, which gives the walls an interesting look and is present in most modern interiors of the bathroom.
In the design of the walls of the bathroom are the same trends – combining tiles of different colors and shades. Just as with the combination of wallpaper, tile manufacturers produce collections of tile design is designed so that they match each other.
Changed and styles of design of bathrooms – more and more often decorate the room with a modern style, in the spirit of minimalism or high-tech. When creating such an interior use plumbing rectangular shapes and a minimum of colors. For all these styles are characterized by neutral tones for walls – white, gray, beige. And on this background there may already be a few bright elements from a compatible range.
However, modern sanitary ware itself can be a decor. There are very decorative forms with graceful outlines.
