Sconces in the bedroom

Most often wall lamps – hang in the bedroom above the bed. They give the opportunity to organize soft light, read with normal lighting and turn it off without getting out of bed. The standard height for placing sconces over the headboard is 1.20 m – 1.6 m. The difference is large, and there are reasons for this.

• The height of the headboard of the bed. It is desirable to hang the lighting fixture above the headboard by 20-30 cm. It is possible and less and more – look at the circumstances and other criteria. But there are models of beds with high headboards. So high that they overlap even the maximum height from the floor – 160 cm. In this case, there are two ways out. The first is to hang them above the edge of the backrest, but, most likely, will require models “with cords” to be able to turn on / off without rising. The second is to install the sconces on the headboard. This is also possible and may be even more convenient.
• Height. When choosing the height of the installation of sconces above the bed can be guided by the height of the person – hang should be so that you can easily reach the switch lying in bed.
• Type of lamp. If the plafond and the flow of light is directed upward, you will have to install the lamp a little lower on the wall, if the light is directed downward, you can install it higher. But do not forget that you have to reach the switch without getting up. A dangling cord or chain that activates the switch will make it easier.

If the bedroom has a dressing table, then local lighting will not hurt here. In this case, hang a sconce should be at the level of the upper third of the mirror. Then both standing and sitting lighting will be normal. Or, as an option – to install several sconces with round lampshades on each side (on the photo on the left).

At what height to place in the nursery

In a child’s room, usually sconces are also hung above the bed. In many cases, this is a nightlight. If the child is small, the criteria for determining the height are different. First of all, it is necessary to take care that the child can not reach the lamp. Therefore, hang a sconce over the crib should be at a height that is 15-20 cm above the height of your child, taking into account the outstretched arm and the fact that he became on his toes.

If the child is older, it is necessary to find such a position of the sconce, so that during games the lamp does not hurt. Usually it is the headboard of the bed. At what height to hang sconces in this case? About 60-80 cm above the level of the mattress. Here again, it is desirable to make it so that you can lie down and reach out and turn on/off the lamp.

Location in the living room

In the living room sconces are hung to highlight the recreation area, creating for it its own cozy corner. Most often wall lights are placed above a sofa and/or armchair.

At what height to hang sconces in this case, depends more on the height of the seat. It is easier to determine practically. Sit in the chair or on the sofa, stretch your arm up. Approximately at the height where the palm is and it is worth hanging a lamp. With this arrangement it will be convenient to read and use, although it is not so important to reach sitting down, because you can stand up.

Take into account one point: if the chairs and sofa are next to each other, and sconces hang above them, it is desirable to hang them at the same height. This looks more harmonious.

Sconces in the corridor and on the stairs

How high and at what distance from each other to hang sconces in the hallway depends on what function they perform. If it is the illumination of the mirror, it is worth placing them just above the top edge. If the lamps are placed along the walls, the optimal height is 180-190 cm. This is if there is no one in the family who has a height of 2 meters and above. In this case, it is necessary to raise, so that the plafonds were at least at the level of the head, but not the shoulders.

Often in the corridor or hallway sconces are hung as illumination for pictures. In this case, these are wall lamps for illuminating pictures and hang above the frames – a little higher. On average, it turns out at a height of 220-230 cm, but it strongly depends on the height of the ceilings.

If the house has a staircase to the second floor, it is also often illuminated by wall lights. They should be placed so that the illumination was sufficient, but at the same time they did not interfere with movement. If the height of the ceiling allows, they should be above the level of the head, if not – at least above the level of the shoulders.

The number of lamps is chosen so that all the steps are well lit. So that at night the light is not too bright, when planning the wiring, you can connect the sconces to two switches – through one. So that there was enough light, but it was not too bright.

In the kitchen

Even the smallest kitchen tries to divide into two zones – the dining area and the cooking area. This separation can be emphasized by lighting, and one way is to hang a pair of wall lights next to the dining table. They are known to create a more private atmosphere.

The height of the installation of sconces in this case – 70-80 cm above the tabletop. This is optimal, but again, you should look at the circumstances and interior.

In the bathroom

If the lamps are two – they can be installed, starting from the middle of the mirror and above. It depends on the level at which the mirror hangs. There is another option – several small plafonds – three to five pieces on each side. With this arrangement, they are placed evenly across the height of the mirror.
